Watermark Hosts Open House & Artist Reception June 27-28, 2025

June 17, 2025 by Dawn Dinnan Leave a Comment

“The Ocean Wins” painting by Gretta McGill

A selection of Artist Gretta McGill’s work is on display at our Chatham studio, and we hope you’ll come see her framed paintings at our Open House and Artist Reception on June 27th and 28th.  The public is invited to drop by between 10 am and 4 pm on Friday or Saturday to view Gretta’s fine art exhibit, enjoy light snacks, and learn more about Watermark Office Services. “Creating marketing materials with a backdrop of Gretta’s art inspires me,” Dawn Dinnan said. “I’m so grateful and proud to showcase our lifelong Aikman family friend’s talents.” A few of Gretta’s paintings have sold while on exhibit, and she will hang more of her pieces for next week’s exhibit at our Munson Meeting Way studio.

Gretta’s art shifts the lens to the seemingly mundane aspects of everyday life, forcing a more profound appreciation of the little things and useful tools from America’s past. Her art looks “at objects or a setting from a different viewpoint, and hopefully brings a new appreciation to the ordinary.”

Gretta grew up on the South Shore and has devoted countless hours to observing, studying, and painting in various seasons when on the water, beaches, bogs, dunes, and wooded areas. She particularly loves the off-season here. When most people consider the Cape deep in hibernation, Gretta sees the lighting changing over the coastline and captures some of these forgotten moments with beautiful detail. The vastness and power of nature have always served as a source of inspiration and passion for her work. Her wildlife and landscape paintings capture the essence of her travels and artistic journey, reflecting not only the places she has visited but also her explorations of style, technique, and the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. She works primarily in oil and graphite.

Gretta has always found a “home away from home” in Chatham and on the Cape, and, despite life taking her elsewhere, she returns several times each year. When not painting, Gretta enjoys hiking and exploring more quiet areas of the Cape. We’re excited to kick off the summer with this special event and welcome art lovers from near and far to stop by. Look for the “Art Sale” flags at both Munson Meeting Way entrances – we’re right in the heart of Chatham off Route 28 (behind ‘The CAEP’ and the Center for the Spiritual Journey), with ample parking.

While you’re out on Friday and Saturday, June 27th and 28th, it’s the last weekend of Historic Chatham month, so we encourage you to explore and celebrate Chatham! The Chatham Railroad Museum will run model trains from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the same Friday and Saturday, just up the street from our Open House. Visit historic-chatham.com for more information.

Join Us for Chatham Earth Week 2025

April 14, 2025 by Dawn Dinnan Leave a Comment

Most events are free of charge, but registration is required.

As Spring blossoms into view, we are reminded of the joys gifted to us from our abundant Earth. This April, “Chatham Earth Week” events are again hosted by the Chatham Conservation Foundation (CCF), Friends of Chatham Waterways, Friends of Trees, and many other groups. During the week of Earth Day and Arbor Day, from April 21st to 27th, several amazing events are planned. You won’t want to miss the Keynote Forum featuring Andrew Gottlieb, Executive Director of the Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC). He will present “Water Quality and the Town of Chatham” at 4 p.m. on April 22nd at the Chatham Community Center.

Everyone is invited to join the Town Cleanup on Saturday, April 26th (either at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., or BOTH), giving all locals opportunities to get involved and make an impact. There is something for everyone, including guided walks, an art supply swap, and activities for kids.

An incredible Film Series and Panel Discussion is planned for Wednesday morning, April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Chatham Orpheum. Entitled “Saving Chatham’s Waters” (by Friends of Chatham Waterways), featuring WHOI videos “Saving Our Ponds,” followed by a panel discussion with Kristin Andres, Association to Preserve Cape Cod; Susan Bauer, Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage; Renee Gagne, Chatham Shellfish Constable; and Rob Faley, Chatham DPW Director. Natalie Coleman-Fuller, Friends of Chatham Waterways board member, will be the moderator. The event is free, and FCW will be officially launching its water pledge program here!

Also, look for details at ccfinc.org about the tree sapling giveaways (by Friends of Trees) to make an Earthly impact right in your backyard. While most events are free of charge and open to the public, be sure to register online at https://ccfinc.org/.

We are gearing up for a great celebration, with this year’s theme of “water” in mind as we reflect on our Earth’s resources. Thanks to the gifts and resources given from Earth, we’re grateful for this opportunity to come together with our community in celebration.

These events would not be possible without the generosity of Cape Cod 5, the Women’s Club of Chatham, and the Chatham Cultural Council. We’ll spotlight all of the local participants in an upcoming blog of appreciation.

Reminder for Local Businesses: Deadline to Advertise in ‘Chatham 2025’ is this Friday!

April 12, 2025 by Dawn Dinnan Leave a Comment

The May publication of the Chatham Chamber’s annual handbook is fast approaching. Watermark is an editorial partner on Chatham 2025, and we’re really excited about the updated content. New maps of conservation trails and points of interest will be featured, plus an exceptional artist’s painted map of the 10 Chatham Town Gardens nurtured by the Garden Club. And the traditional calendar of Chatham events throughout the year is a helpful resource through all four seasons.

Time is of the essence to reserve ad space. The Chamber will print 20,000 copies—distributed from May 2025 to April 2026 in print and online. This is a cost-effective way to share your business or nonprofit marketing messages with residents, part-timers, and visitors. The deadline to advertise is April 18th.

Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Association members receive an exclusive member discount on ads — and a Member Directory Listing with business name and phone number. But non-members who serve the Chatham community are also invited to advertise in this comprehensive handbook.

We’re happy to share this opportunity to be a part of “Chatham 2025” with area small businesses beyond the Chamber membership. Download and submit your ad and contract this week — here is the Chamber website link for more information.

Watermark Congratulates Aspiring Author John Trudeau

October 9, 2024 by Dawn Dinnan Leave a Comment

Dawn and John review Muireall’s Iceland in the editing stages.

It has been a gift to work with John Trudeau on publishing his first novel, a historical fiction set in the 900s in Iceland and beyond. Studying at the College of William and Mary (Virginia) and the University of St. Andrews (Scotland), John has been writing and perfecting Muireall’s Iceland: A Viking Saga since his family’s vacation abroad a few years ago.

The novel tells a story with vivid attention to detail that puts readers right in the heart of the Viking Age. John’s use of native languages and names brings this historic and foreign world right to your imagination – complete with voyages and gruesome battles. Inspired by his family’s trip to Iceland in February of 2020 – and his enjoyment of historical fiction and books by Bernard Cornwell – John hand wrote the entire beginning of the novel while overseas. He completed the book as his last project before graduating high school. His grasp of the history in the 900s is impressive, even for a history major!

This summer, collaborating with Watermark owner Dawn Dinnan on proofreading, editing, and publication design has brought the tortuous clashes of Vikings and Norsemen to life here in our Munson Meeting Way studio.

John is excited about being a published author. His ideal reader is anyone interested in history – especially that of Viking times. The story is swashbuckling, yet plausible, he said, adding that the dynamic female protagonist is underrepresented in the genre. The saga keeps true to its historical roots, but John also created characters his readers could relate to in the modern age. So, while the book takes place in a reality starkly different from our own, centering around Vikings, or what John calls “robbers with a cooler aesthetic,” readers of today will comprehend the characters and what drives them.

John grew up in Connecticut, but his roots in Chatham are strong. He has come here every summer to a home established in the late 1950s by his great grandmother. This summer, when he wasn’t here at Watermark preparing his novel for publication, he was volunteering at the Atwood Museum with the Historical Society, serving as a game day intern for the Chatham Anglers, or spending time with his family.

Combining his experiences with his passions, John Trudeau has crafted an intriguing novel that we cannot wait to see in print! He’s off to college in Scotland, but when his first book is available, we’ll be the first to share the news.
